According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) research on U.S. home fires, “most of the reduction in fire deaths over the past decades has been due to a reduction in fires rather than the prevention of harm after a fire is reported.” NFPA contends that “A portable fire extinguisher can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or containing it until the fire department arrives.” Its data shows that cooking is the dominant cause of home fires, accounting for nearly half of all incidents, while heating equipment, electrical distribution, and lighting equipment together make up less than one-third of reported home fires. The purpose of this 30-minute training is to sensitize participants to the potential for fire at home and workplace, as well as to help them to keep small fires small using portable fire extinguishers.
